I know, I know, it’s totally irritating when companies (and bloggers!) pitch products to celebrate Earth Day 2012 on April 22nd. After all, wouldn’t the Earth be better off if we all stopped buying stuff?
Well, yes and no. We need to eat, and most of us tend to be more comfortable if we bathe regularly and clothe ourselves (well, at least I am – I know there are others who disagree – my kids definitely fall into that “other” category). So to me, shopping has become a necessary evil, but can be fun when it’s done right – it’s all about product selection and timing.
Of course, I work hard to find brands and retailers who genuinely care for our planet, its people and our legacy and I vote with my dollars by intentionally seeking out these brands and products. It can be an arduous process at times, but it is worth it to me to ensure my dollars are used to support my family’s values, my community and the health of my family and the workers making and selling products we buy. Generally, the timing piece means waiting until a particular product becomes available, shopping during a sale to save a little money, or even picking the best time of the day for my kids’ moods.
And oftentimes for many of us, it also means shopping for a cause…like this one!
If you’ve been here before, then you already know that Healthy Child Healthy World is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. When my daughter Kaitlyn suffered from severe and chronic respiratory distress for which there appeared to be no cure, Healthy Child Healthy World was among the handful of organizations which provided much needed advice and encouragement, leading my family to make the changes we needed to make in our home to help our little girl get healthy and strong.
So I was thrilled to learn that Patagonia has made an Earth Day pledge to donate $10.00 to Healthy Child Healthy World for each pair of Patagonia shoes purchased from OnlineShoes.com between April 10 – April 23, 2012! This is one of the most generous donation programs I’ve seen, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. And there’s more! To generate buzz about this program, Patagonia has partnered with OnlineShoes.com to offer a pair of Patagonia shoes to one lucky Green Kids Guide reader!
While I own several Patagonia clothing items, I did not have first-hand experience with their shoes. So when OnlineShoes.com also graciously offered to send me a pair of my choosing, I did a little happy dance. My husband was SUPER excited because Patagonia has such a great selection of men’s shoes for all kinds of activities, from running to hiking to business casual, and he couldn’t wait to get his hands (feet) on his favorite pair. But…then I remembered that I haven’t gotten a new pair of running shoes since my daughter was born 2 1/2 years ago.
So his dreams were lovingly squashed as I browsed their equally lovely women’s collection and selected the Fore Runner Forge for myself. With two kids and two businesses, it’s hard for me to find time for myself and exercise is my #1 get-healthy priority right now. So the timing couldn’t have been better. My new shoes arrived quickly and came beautifully packaged in minimal and 100% recyclable materials. I have committed to a new running routine and can’t wait to get my new Fore Runners on my feet and hit the pavement…or the trail…or even the gym!
ABOUT PATAGONIA: I have long been a fan of Patagonia as a company. Their mission statement pretty much sums up why. Patagonia strives to: “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”
While their supply chain isn’t perfect, they come pretty darned close and are completely transparent about their weak areas and what they’re doing to improve. In fact, Patagonia is so committed to transparency, they have created the Footprint Chronicles, an interactive experience that takes you on a journey thru the entire supply chain to discover the environmental and social impacts of each product.
Additionally, Patagonia demonstrates its commitment to environmental sustainability by donating 1% of sales each year to support environmental organizations around the world, funding at the grassroots level in countries and communities where they have people on the ground. Since 1985, they have awarded over $46 million in cash and in-kind donations to domestic and international grassroots environmental groups making a difference in their local communities.
ABOUT MY SHOES: Why did I choose these particular Patagonia shoes? While I pretty much love their entire collection, I chose this pair because they are lightweight, leather-free, have 15% recycled EVA foot padding, and let’s face it, they look cute with my “mom sweats” (ie. yoga pants and t-shirts I wear when I run…and most of the rest of the time, too).
Established in 1996 in my hometown of Seattle, WA, OnlineShoes.com was the nation’s first online shoe retailer. With a history that began decades ago in a family-owned corner shoe store, the company is committed to delivering exceptional value and service. OnlineShoes.com offers the latest high-quality footwear for men, women and kids with more than 240,000 shoe and clothing choices from more than 250 name brands, as well as a wide selection of bags and accessories. Customers are entitled to a 110-percent price guarantee, a 365-day return policy, and free shipping and exchanges on most orders. I also love that they have 1,100+ pairs of “Eco-Friendly” Shoes and more than 300 styles of Vegan Shoes available!
Additionally, OnlineShoes.com thinks it’s important to reach out and get people back on their feet, both figuratively and literally. That’s why they donate hundreds of pairs of shoes to the Hana Youth and Senior Center in Maui each year, as well as give back to numerous charitable organizations including Dress for Success, the Seattle Senior Center and the YWCA.
